Development in India Legal System

The Indian legal system has undergone significant changes in recent years, and there have been several developments that could be seen as making it more liberal. Here are some examples:

Decriminalization of homosexuality: In 2018, the Indian Supreme Court decriminalized homosexuality, which had been illegal under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. This was a major step towards greater acceptance and recognition of the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

Women's rights: In recent years, there have been several landmark judgments by the Indian courts that have upheld women's rights. For example, in 2019, the Supreme Court ruled that women could serve as army commanders, and in 2021, it held that daughters have equal coparcenary rights in joint Hindu family property.

Right to privacy: In 2017, the Indian Supreme Court recognized the right to privacy as a fundamental right under the Indian Constitution. This was a significant step towards protecting individual liberties and freedoms.

Abolition of triple talaq: In 2019, the Indian Parliament passed a law that abolished the practice of triple talaq, which allowed Muslim men to divorce their wives by uttering the word "talaq" three times. This was seen as a progressive move towards gender equality.

Legalization of same-sex marriage: While same-sex marriage is not yet legal in India, there have been increasing calls for its legalization, and some states have taken steps towards recognizing same-sex relationships. For example, in 2021, the state of Kerala registered its first same-sex couple under the Special Marriage Act.

These are just a few examples of how the Indian legal system is becoming more liberal. However, there is still a long way to go in terms of ensuring equal rights and justice for all.
